Australia does not publish company-level customs records, so there is no official list of who imports your product. Exporters find Australian buyers through trade shows, industry associations, directories, their own trade office and by researching companies that sell or use their product today. Before any of that, check the biosecurity conditions for your product: Australia's are among the strictest in the world, and buyers expect you to know them.
Where Australian buyer lists come from
| Source | What it gives you | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Trade shows in Australia | Buyers in your category, exhibitor lists (for example Fine Food Australia for food) | Most exhibitors are sellers; costly for a first test |
| Industry associations | Member directories of distributors and wholesalers | Membership is not buying |
| Your country's trade office in Australia | Introductions, distributor contacts | Depth varies |
| Customs data platforms | Limited: Australia does not publish company-level records | Mostly mirror data from exporting countries |
| Web buyer research | Companies that sell or use your product today, and who decides | You have to describe the buyer well; Outfound does this work |
Check biosecurity before you look for buyers
The Department of Agriculture publishes the import conditions for each product in BICON, its biosecurity import conditions system. Food, plant and animal products, wooden goods and packaging can need permits, treatments or certificates. If your product needs a permit, say so in your first email and explain how you will meet it; it answers the buyer's first question.
What Australian buyers ask first
- Compliance: biosecurity, product standards and labelling for your category.
- Landed cost and lead time: freight to Australia is long; quote a delivered price and a realistic lead time.
- Reliability: consistent quality and references from other export customers.
Checking an Australian company
- What does it sell or use? Product pages and brands carried.
- Importer, distributor or retailer? "Exclusive distributor for…" pages and stockist lists are clues.
- Does it already buy from abroad? Origins named on products say yes.
- Who decides? Purchasing or the category manager; in smaller firms, the owner.
Outfound runs this check for every candidate, keeps the companies that fit with the reason and a source link, finds the decision-maker and writes the first email. For the methods in general, see how to find buyers for export.
